After a very disappointing shut out loss to Arlington Catholic on Monday’s home opener, the Mustang softball team rebounded to beat Revere, 10-6 on Tuesday and Watertown, 13-3, on Thursday.

Head Coach Jack Dempsey called the Revere team “scrappy,” as Medford earned their first win of the season at home at Tufts Park.

The Lady Mustangs scored four times in the 1st inning to take the lead but the Revere squad responded with five runs in the 2nd inning. Medford then “executed some nifty bunting, slapping and base running to produce their final six runs,” said Coach Dempsey.

Junior speedster Kasey Moran went 4 for 4, with four stolen bases, three runs scored, and one RBI. Senior Captain Nicole Lopilato went 3 for 4, with three RBI’s and three stolen bases. Junior Vicky Luongo belted a bases-clearing triple and also had a single. Junior Kristina Bove delivered on the mound, pitching the entire game as well as contributing offensively with a hit and a stolen base.

Several other players contributed to the solid Mustang victory. Junior Jackie Pellecchia had a single, two bases on balls and three thefts. Senior JT Rizzo had a hit and one stolen base. Junior Sarah Moulton chipped in with a single and one RBI, while freshman Sam Lopilato made several outstanding plays at 3rd base.

The big bat of Lopilato and strong pitching from sophomore Rayann Staude and senior Jess Mortelite helped the Mustangs handily beat Watertown on Thursday. The local nine hammered seventeen hits and nabbed seven stolen bases.

Lopilato banged out four hits, including a towering grand slam which broke up a 2-2 tie in the 4th inning. Lopilato finished the game with six RBI’s, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Staude and Mortelite combined on a 4-hitter with 9 strikeouts. Rizzo was 3 for 3 with two stolen bases. Lopilato’s freshman sister Sam contributed two hits and nine other Mustangs had one hit apiece.

The Lady ‘Stangs, now 2-1, play again next Tuesday at Waltham and Friday at home vs the Hawks.
