Head Coach Dave McCarthy and the Medford girls varsity ice hockey team opened their season with a huge shut-out victory over Masconomet on Wednesday.

The girls blanked Masconomet, 3-0, on Masco’s home ice.

Masconomet is one of the top-ranked teams in the state.

“It certainly was a big win,” said Coach McCarthy.

The game was tied 0-0 into the third period when the team, especially 8th grader Brittani Lanzilli, responded with a great effort. Lanzilli scored three goals (a pure “hat-trick” in hockey terms) and 7th grader Kassi Abbott, in her first Varsity start, provided the shut-out in goal.

“It was excellent early season victory in the opponents’ home rink. Thus, a nice bus ride home,” said Coach McCarthy.

Lanzilli also led the Mustangs in their 6-4 victory over Cambridge on Saturday. Lanzilli had four goals and one assist for Medford while junior Kristina Bove had one goal and four assists.

The girls are away for the next several games before hosting Everett on Wednesday, January 13 at 5PM.
