MHS Hockey Tops Competition at Jamboree

Medford 2, Wakefield 1

The boys varsity hockey team, led by new coach Steve DeBenedictis, pulled out a 2-1 victory over Wakefield on Saturday at LoConte Rink.

Sophomore forward Brian Enos scored the Mustangs’ first goal, followed up by a goal by senior forward Nick Squillacioti. Junior goalie Michael Gendreau tended the net for Medford.

The Mustangs head to Beverly on Wednesday for a game at Salem State and host Canton on Saturday at 4PM at LoConte Rink.

Medford opens up its Greater Boston League competition when they head to Everett on Wednesday, January 6.

DeBenedictis is in his first season as head coach of the Mustangs. DeBenedictis took over the program from former head coach Chuck Allen, who led the team for seven years. DeBenedictis coached at St. John’s Prep for seventeen years, serving as a goaltender coach and defensive assistant, head junior varsity coach, and assistant head varsity coach.

DeBenedictis is a 1986 Malden High School graduate and also attended St. Anselm College. He has worked at VIP Men’s Hair Styling in Medford Square for over twenty years.

DeBenedictis’ staff includes assistant varsity coaches Mark Bates and Mike DeBenedictis, and junior varsity coach Josh Glionna.
