Maiocco, Dello Russo Elected to Lead City Council

The Medford City Council has selected its leadership for the 2010 term.

Long-time City Councilor Robert Maiocco has been elected President and City Councilor Fred Dello Russo, elected in 2005, was selected to serve as Vice-President.

This is Councilor Maiocco’s tenth term as Council president and it is Councilor Dello Russo’s first time serving as part of the Council leadership. Councilor Maiocco most recently served as President in 2007.

Councilors Maiocco and Dello Russo were nominated in a special caucus before Tuesday’s Council meeting and received the unanimous support of their colleagues in attendance. The caucus was chaired by the Council’s senior member, Robert Penta.

Councilor Michael Marks was not present for the caucus because of a prior commitment. He said that if he had attended the caucus, his vote would have been for “a fresh new direction for the Council and not the same old leadership.”

Councilor Marks has served as Vice-President four times and was interested in serving as President.

The city councilors select their leadership from amongst themselves each year. The Council President leads the meetings each week and selects the sub-committee members.

City Councilor Breanna Lungo-Koehn is currently wrapping up her first term as President, with Councilor Michael Marks serving as Vice-President.

Councilor Maiocco said he is “grateful” for his colleagues’ support.
