Accessible Voting Machine Training October 29

accessible voting machineThe city is holding a training session for those who might make use of accessible voting machines on Election Day.

The training session is Thursday, October 29 starting at 2PM. Human Diversity Director Diane McLeod says anyone is welcome to come down to City Hall for the training and try out the machines, which were launched for the first time during the 2007 municipal election.

“We realize that often times individuals can be overwhelmed or intimidated with new technology. These machines have clear instructions for use, and we hope that if you would like to try them out, that you come and give them them a test run,” said McLeod.

According to McLeod, the AutoMARK, as the voting machine is officially known, can be used by persons with various types of disabilities. It can assist persons with a vision and/or hearing impairment and with mobility issues. The machines have a touch screen, headphones, a key pad with braille, and also has a Sip-N-Puff Port for voters who utilize this device for mobility and independence.

There will be one accessible voting machine at every poll. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
