Volleyball season is underway for the Medford Mustangs Volleyball Team. Led by senior captains, Bethany Kong, Rebecca Luongo, Brooke Stanton, and Anya Pierre-Louis, the mustangs have hit the ground running with their new coaching staff, Alice Beth Tierney and Jessica Moody. The roster is full of great athletes and individuals with the strong desire to play hard-hitting, fast paced volleyball. Along with the captains, the other seniors leading the team on the court are Naomie Laguerre and Lily Kwan. Our juniors are Jen Uang, Maggie Tobin, Davielle Pierette, Stephanie Nguyen, Marisa Fouraux, Mady Forcier, and Kathleen Harding. We also have sophomores Rachel Keen, Ariana Fiorello, Christine Feely, and Katie Bowler who are always ready to play and work hard.

Due to a very large turn out of young players for try-outs this year, the Mustangs Volleyball program has kept a large junior varsity squad. Fortunately, all of the teams within the Greater Boston League have three levels of teams, a varsity, JV-A, and JV-B/Freshman team. This enables all of our younger players to play in game situations. The players on our JV squads are sophomores Kelly Hayes, Shannon Hussey, Cally McCormick, Michelle Nguyen, Hemilly Correa, Rayann Staude, Paola Tramontin, Kathryn Ellersick, MacKenzie Newell, and Daniela Lindemeyer. Freshmen are Alison Ross, Kayla Greeley, Katherine Corneilson, Hayley Donahue, Lydia Regan, Brittany Stanton, Kayla Keniston, Katie Napier, and Devin O’Hare.

In our season opener against Somerville High School, both levels of JV played in best of three matches. The JV-A team won two games to one but unfortunately, the JV-B team lost two games to one. The varsity squad came out strong in their best of five match. The Mustangs took the first two games from Somerville but lost the match, 3-2.

This week we face Cambridge on Tuesday, Everett on Wednesday for our first home game, and will head to Malden on Friday.

Update
Cambridge beat Medford in a close game, 3-1 on Tuesday. Although the Mustangs won the first game, 25-19, Cambridge took the next three games- 25-19, 25-23, 25-22. The Mustangs were led by Naomi Laguerre, who had four aces and seven kills, and Brooke Stanton, with two blocks and three kills. Also, strong serving performances were given by Anya Pierre-Louis and Lily Kwan to keep the Mustangs close in games 3 and 4.
