The Medford Mustang softball team pulled out a huge win Tuesday with a 7-2 upset win over previously undefeated Malden.

The Golden Tornadoes have been unstoppable behind the stellar pitching of freshman phenom Kiara Amos and have been mowing down their competition- until now.

Medford toppled Malden after falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, effectively destroying Malden’s dreams of earning the Greater Boston League crown while remaining undefeated. Medford also put away the Golden Tornadoes on a very special day, as the team’s seniors were honored after the game at Tufts Park.

Medford was down two nothing at the top of the first before they came roaring back with seven unanswered runs to beat a stunned Malden nine. The Lady Mustangs were beaten 1-0 just the day before in Malden.

Junior Jess Mortelite again came through for the Mustangs and pitched a strong game for the second day in a row against the Golden Tornadoes, giving up three hits while walking five and recording no strike outs. The Medford offensive attack was led once again by senior captain Kim Perault, who banged out a triple, double, and single, good for four RBI’s. Captains Jen Bove (senior) and Nicole Lopilato (junior) each had a pair of hits and stolen bases. Lopilato had two RBI’s and two stolen bases while Bove also had two stolen bases and two runs scored. Sophomore Kasey Moran chipped in with two hits and three runs scored.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs headed to Cambridge and won a wild game by a score of 15-11. Lopilato led the hitting attack with four hits, including a home run, triple and two singles, along with four RBI’s and four runs scored. Moran had four hits, four runs scored and three stolen bases while Perault added three hits, three runs scored and two RBI’s. Sophomore Sarah Moulton and junior Katie Smith had a pair of hits apiece.

The Medford squad finished in 3rd place in the Greater Boston League after a 6-1 loss to Everett on Thursday. They finished the season with 7-5 GBL record, 7-10 overall, and wrap up with a Memorial Day weekend tournament in Arlington with a semi-final round game with Cape Anne League Champion North Reading at noon on Saturday. The winner will play Sunday against the Arlington/Arlington Catholic winner and the loser will play the loser in the consolation game starting at noon.
