The Medford High School varsity girls lacrosse team secured the Greater Boston League championship with a 15-9 victory over Malden on Monday night.

Monday night’s home game was the second one “under the lights.” The Mustangs will play their final GBL game under the lights at Hormel on Wednesday, May 13, at 7PM against Cambridge. Seniors will also be honored on that night and head coach Matt Galusi will certainly miss the twelve talented Mustangs that will be graduating from the team.

Key seniors departing from the team include tri-captain and goalie Angel Donovan, who earned her first shutout of the season last week against Essex Agricultural and Technical Institute, tri-captain Cat Elia, tri-captain Megan Martignetti, Danielle Garcia, Kristi Lanzilli, Kat Picarde, Olivia Amato, Lauren Laskey, Diandra Spagnuolo, Melissa Ferragamo, and Lisa and Christina Cardone.

Other members of the varsity team are Mary Barber, Francesca Alfonso, Lauren O’Connor, Leanne Bordonaro, Leah Farrell, Angela Barry, Janelle Rocco, Ivana Garcia, Ericka Silva, Allana Viveiros, Deanna Cavallaro, and Mady Forcier.

The team is 6-6 overall and is undefeated in the GBL. The team will qualify for the state tournament if it keeps its record at .500 or better.  The Mustangs did make it to states last season but were defeated in the first round.

The GBL victory is especially sweet, as the league could potentially cease to exist after next year if it folds into the Middlesex League.

“This is a big deal…especially with the Greater Boston League…it’s probabaly going to be gone after this year, so it will be a nice thing to be able to put a GBL girls lacrosse banner in the gym,” said Galusi.
