Mustang Baseball, Softball Grab Double-Digit Wins

The Medford High School baseball and softball teams are holding steady in the Greater Boston League after both pulled off double-digit victories on Friday.

The Medford Lady Mustangs did not disappoint the large crowd that turned out for the team’s first home night game decisive 12 -1 victory over Cambridge. Jess Mortelite pitched a 4-hitter while striking out five batters. Senior captain Jen Bove and hot-hitting freshman Emily Welch belted long home runs. Welch had two hits and five RBI’s for the night while Bove had two RBI’s and scored two runs.

Junior Kate Smith had two hits while senior captain Kim Perault had a triple and an RBI and junior captain Nicole Lopilato had a single, RBI, and scored two runs. Senior Lisa Furtardo and freshman Jackie Pellechia each had a hit and sophomore Vicky Luongo had a single, two RBI’s, and two runs.

The Lady Mustangs stand at 4-1 in Greater Boston League and will play undefeated Malden twice this coming week- Tuesday at Malden and Wednesday at Tufts Park in Medford at 4PM.

Meanwhile, the Mustang baseball team put away Malden 18-8 at home on Friday. Junior Mike Sullivan got the win on the mound. Junior standouts Greg Wilson and Ian Fitzgerald led the offensive attack with a couple of home runs.

The Mustangs are currently 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the GBL. Head Coach Nick Tucci said the team has its sights set on both winning the GBL and qualifying for the state tournament for the second year in a row.

The team heads to Everett on Tuesday looking to avenge a 6-0 shutout on April 27.
