Mystic NAACP Co-Sponsors MLK Dinner

Hassell McClellanAnnual Event Held in Arlington, All Welcome

The Mystic Valley Area Branch of the NAACP, which includes Medford, Arlington, Everett, Malden, Winchester, and Woburn, is a co-sponsor of the following event:

Dr. Hassell H. McClellan, an associate professor at Boston College is the keynote speaker at the annual Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Observance on Monday, January 19 at 6:00 p.m. at Arlington Town Hall.  All interested residents of Arlington and surrounding communities are invited to attend.

The evening begins with a sharing of food. Those attending are asked to bring a finger food, appetizer, or dessert to serve six adults. Following refreshments, the program will begin in the Town Hall auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Those who cannot come for refreshments are welcome to attend the program. During the evening, a collection will be taken for the Arlington Food Pantry. Donations of canned goods and other nonperishable items are appreciated as part of President-elect Obama’s request that Americans use the Martin Luther King weekend to perform acts of community service.

Dr. McClellan, the featured speaker, is an associate professor and former associate dean of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. As the associate dean from 1996-2000, he was responsible for the leadership of the School’s graduate programs. Under Dr. McClellan’s leadership, Boston College’s MBA Program achieved its first ranking in U.S. News and World Report’s Top 50 Business Schools. Prior to his affiliation with Boston College, Dr. McClellan served on the faculty at Harvard University and is a former banker with Harris Trust in Chicago. Dr. McClellan specializes in strategic management and management of financial services institutions. Music for the evening will be provided by the Sudanese Women Performers.

A free-will offering will be taken during the evening’s program. Proceeds will be divided between the Arlington Public Schools, the Martin Luther King Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Arlington African-American Scholarship Fund. Those who cannot attend, but would like to make a donation, can send checks to the Martin Luther King Committee at PO Box 320, Arlington 02476. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. This event is handicapped accessible.

The annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coordinated by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Observance Committee of Arlington, an interfaith committee of Arlington residents.
