Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will speak at Tufts for a special lecture series in February 2009.

Blair is the latest world leader to take the podium for Tufts’ annual Issam M. Fares Lecture Series, first started in 1991 by the son of a trustee to promote understanding of issues facing the Middle East. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, former Senator Hillary Clinton, and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, among other leaders, have each participated in the lecture series.

Blair served as British Prime Minister for ten years, from 1997-2007. He has been an outspoken advocate for peace in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on finding a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has also launched the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, aimed at promoting tolerance of the world’s major religions, and the Tony Blair Sports Foundation, an organization that promotes health and fitness through sports.

The lecture will take place on February 2 at 4:30PM and tickets will be distributed via an online lottery system the week of January 26, according to the Tufts Daily.  It’s unclear if the lecture is open to the public.
