Despite Loss, Mustangs Show Improvement

Medford Football Gets in the Game Against North Andover

– Allison Goldsberry

Though the competition was Division 2A, and the game ended up as a loss, the Mustang football team put together some impressive plays on Friday night against North Andover that shows the team is improving as the season advances.

Junior quarterback Mike Sullivan and senior kicker Rodrigo Alegre were the stars of the night, scoring three touchdowns for the Mustangs, including two in the second quarter.

First, Alegre scored on a 65-yard punt return and then Sullivan scored on a 13-yard run in the second quarter to leave the Mustangs down by only one point at the half.  But North Andover responded with two touchdowns in the third and despite a strong defensive effort in the fourth that held North Andover at bay, the Mustangs only scored one more time, ending the game 27-18.  The last Mustang touchdown was an impressive one, with Alegre scoring on a 50-yard pass from Sullivan.

The loss leaves the Mustangs 0-5 as they head into Saturday’s 11am game at Austin Prep (4-1).  They are 0-0 in the Greater Boston League as they have yet to play any of their league rivals, and will be looking for their first GBL win when they head to Somerville (2-3) on October 24.  They host pigskin powerhouse Everett (4-1) at home on Halloween, followed by Cambridge (2-2) on November 7 and Malden Catholic (4-2) on November 14, and then head to Malden (2-4) for the annual Thanksgiving Day showdown.
