Question 1 Meeting Tuesday Night

Binding Ballot Initiative Would Eliminate State Income Tax; Meeting Tuesday Night at South Medford Fire Station

Story Updated 6:39PM, Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The local Stand for Children chapter is coming to Medford Tuesday night to discuss the potential impact about Question 1, a binding initiative to eliminate the state income tax, if it is approved by voters on November 4.

The meeting has been moved from Medford High School to the South Medford Fire Station at 7PM.

The Medford School Committee recently took a symbolic vote against Question 1, voting 6-1 with Lena DiGiantommaso dissenting.

Some Committee members say eliminating the state income tax would result in even less funding for Medford’s schools.

A similar, non-binding ballot question to repeal the state income tax nearly passed in 2002 with 45% of the vote.  This year’s initiative is binding and would reduce the state income tax rate to 2.65% in January 2009 and would completely eliminate it in January 2010.

Opponents of Question 1 say it will slash 40% of the state budget and would result in “chaos” for the public education system, such as increased class sizes and teacher layoffs.
