Cross-Country Kicks off Season with Friendly Scrimmage

The Medford Boys and Girls Cross-Country teams stretched their legs out yesterday in a friendly practice meet in Arlington against non-leaguer Arlington Catholic.

The teams ran a two-loop, 1.9 mile course at Menotomy Rocks Park, the home course of AC.  Despite the absence of top runner and Boston Globe All-Scholastic Phil Galebach, the boys ran a strong race and the girls, led by senior and Greater Boston League All-Star Katherine Picarde, also ran strong and put in a good showing against AC.

Head Coach Lou Ruggiero said the team is looking to build and is encouraging prospective runners, especially freshmen and off-season athletes, to join the team.  Ruggiero noted that a couple of freshman basketball players who are steering clear of football to avoid injuries are doing particularly well.

Interested runners should head up to the track in back of the high school after school or contact assistant coach Tom Lynch at tlynch@medford.k12.ma.us.

The team’s first official meet is Thursday, September 11, in an open Greater Boston League meet at Fresh Pond in Cambridge.
