Medford Reps Secure Money for Transportation Projects

$10.2 Million in State Funding Expected for Wellington Circle, Clippership Drive, Green Line, South Medford

Medford’s legislative delegation of State Representatives Paul Donato (D-Medford), Carl Sciortino (D-Medford), and Sean Garballey (D-Arlington), and State Senator Pat Jehlen (D-Somerville) recently announced that more than $10 million is heading Medford’s way for various transportation projects.

The state Transportation Bond Bill will provide $750,000 for the design and construction of traffic signals at Main Street, Alexander Avenue, Harvard Avenue, and Willis Avenue; $800,000 for the design and construction of traffic signals at the intersection of Main Street and route 16, South Street, and Mystic Avenue; $150,000 for a study of a Green Line extension by the city of Medford in coordination with the executive office of transportation and construction; $3,500,000 for the realignment of Clippership drive and associated roadway and pedestrian improvements; and $5,000,000.00 to conduct a traffic study at Wellington Circle.

“This money is targeted at some of the most challenging intersections in the city of Medford. Additionally, we were able to secure $150,000 to facilitate a study of the Greenline corridor in Medford. I believe that it is very important that we work together to ensure that economic development and transportation development go hand in hand,” said Sen. Jehlen.

“South Medford residents are being choked by a high volume of traffic that sits idle along Harvard Street. Improving the traffic signals at these intersections will help improve the flow of traffic in this highly congested area,” said Rep. Sciortino, referring to the funds to improve traffic signalization along the Harvard Avenue corridor.

“As a delegation, we are grateful that our colleagues supported us in these worthwhile projects that will benefit all the citizens of Medford,” said Rep. Donato.

“I am proud to work with my colleagues from the Medford delegation on these important issues. We will continue to work toward improving traffic flow and safety for everyone in Medford and we will continue to insure that the citizens of Medford will have a voice in the proposed Greenline extension,” said Rep. Garballey.
