After a disappointing loss to Cambridge last week, the Medford Mustang Baseball team came out strong Monday afternoon and knocked off Greater Boston League leader Malden, 8-2.

The Mustangs scored all of their eight runs in the second inning until the Malden bullpen woke up and shut them down for the rest of the game.

Sophomore Ian Fitzgerald was a force on the mound again, holding Malden batters at bay and giving up only two runs.  He pitched the entire seven innings and got the win for the Mustangs.

Head Coach Nick Tucci was pleased with his team’s performance. He said both the offense and defense came together well for the win and the team played close to “perfect baseball.”

“Everyone chipped in pretty good. It was a good team victory,” said Tucci.

Malden, 12-4, was the first team in the GBL to clinch a play-off berth and has the best record in the league.

It was a huge victory for the Mustangs, who are looking for ten wins on the season to make it to the state tournament for the first time since 2001.

The team, 6-4 in the GBL and 7-7 overall, must win at least three of their remaining six games to maintain a .500 record and to clinch a spot in the play-offs.

The team faces Arlington at home on Wednesday and then heads to Everett on Thursday
