Former Sox Star to Hold Free Clinic for Kids

Dennis “The Oil Can” BoydFormer Red Sox pitcher Dennis “The Oil Can” Boyd will lend his pitching skills gratis for a pitching clinic held at 1st Place Sports Complex in Medford.

The Sox star will team up with David Valdez and Roberto Valdez, both also former Major League players, to coach kids in two free pitching clinics scheduled for February vacation.

The clinics will be held Tuesday, February 19, and Wednesday, February 20, from 2PM to 4PM at the 1st Place Sports Complex, located inside Gold’s Gym at 4000 Mystic Valley Parkway in Medford.

The top ten “prospects” will be invited to participate in an intensive, five-week hitting and pitching program with Boyd and Roberto Valdez. The lucky ten players will receive instructions from the pros on developing arm strength, conditioning, power, speed/agility, and how to field like a Major League player.

Boyd pitched for the Sox from 1982 to 1989, winning 16 games during the 1986 season, including 3 post-season games for that year’s ALCS. Boyd finished his career with a 4.04 ERA and a better than 2-1 strikeout vs walk ratio. David Valdez played for the LA Dodgers and Seattle Mariners, while Roberto Valdez played for the Milwaukee Brewers and LA Angels.
