Five apartments are up for grabs in an affordable housing lottery and interested residents need to act fast to get applications in by the December 27 deadline.

Five affordable units at Wellington Place are available- three one-bedrooms and two two-bedrooms. Medford residents will be given preference on three of the units and the other two are equally available to residents inside and outside of Medford.

According to Affordable Housing Specialist Erica Schwarz, rent for the one-bedroom units will be around $950 per month and $1,100 for the two-bedrooms units, not including utilities.

The rents are based on what is considered affordable for households earning 80% of the Area Median Income, which is $46,300 for a single person household and $66,150 for a household of four.

Schwarz said that though the rent might still be high for many families, Section 8 and MRVP vouchers could be used to help cover the rent.

Wellington Place is a new development directly across from the Wellington MBTA station. The buildings have elevators, offstreet parking, and a fitness room.

Applications are available online or can be picked up at the Medford Public Library or Room 308 at City Hall. Applications must be submitted on or before December 27, 2007.
