After serving for seventeen years as a state representative for Arlington and part of Medford, State Representative Jim Marzilli (D-Arlington) is now a state senator after winning a senate seat in a special election Tuesday.

Marzilli won a seat vacated by former State Senator Robert Havern (D-Arlington), who left for a lobbying gig. The senate district includes all of Arlington, Burlington, and Billerica, and parts of Woburn and Lexington.

Marzille will no longer represent Medford and a special election will have to be held to fill his state representative seat. That seat includes much of Arlington and a slice of West Medford that includes precinct 2 of Ward 3, Medford’s largest precinct, where voters cast their ballots at Temple Shalom.

According to results posted on ArlingtonMass.com, Marzilli won 59.4% of the vote. Candidates Republican Brion Cangiamila and Constitution Party candidate Thomas Fallon earned 36.1% and 4.5% of the vote, respectively.

Marzilli won 6,273 votes, compared to Cangiamila’s 3,811. Despite winning Billerica and Burlington, and splitting Woburn with Marzilli, Cangiamila earned little more than 20% of the vote in Lexington and Arlington, and the relatively high voter turnout of those two towns handed Marzilli the victory.
