The Medford Arts Council has set an October 15 deadline for organizations, schools and individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community.

These grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Medford– including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

Applicants do not need to be a member of an organization or a practicing artist to get a grant, only a great idea that will benefit the citizens of Medford, and a willingness to put planning, thought, and care, into a simple grant application.

Current prominent events that the Medford Arts Council is supporting include the Medford Arts Festival last month and 13FOREST Gallery’s Thursday Nights in the Square, along with many wonderful local cultural activities, school trips to museums and shows, public music performances, and much more. The Medford Arts Council funding for each one of those events happened because someone sent in a grant application.

The Arts Council will also entertain funding proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, a ticket subsidy program for school-aged children.

The Medford Arts Council is part of a grass-roots network of 329 local councils that serve every city and town in the state. The program is the largest, most decentralized one of its kind in the United States. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates funds to each local council. This year, the Medford Arts Council will distribute about $20,000 in grants.

Contact Robin Einzig, Medford Arts Council Chair, at 781-718-5736 or robineinzig@comcast.net for specific guidelines and information.

Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program are available on the web at https://www.mass-culture.org/lcc_home.asp, at the Medford Public Library and at the City Clerk’s Office.
