Wind Turbine Meeting Tonight at McGlynn School

A wind turbine

The city is planning to build a wind turbine like this at the McGlynn School.

The City will hold a public meeting tonight at 6PM at the McGlynn School Auditorium to discuss plans for a 100 kilowatt wind turbine at the school.

The turbine, to be located about 200 feet from the Mystic River, will be about the same size as the IBEW turbine on Route 93.

Medford has received $250,000 from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and a $16,000 Clean Energy Choice grant for the design and construction of the project.   The total cost of the wind turbine is $472,921 and the city hopes to secure another $200,000 in grant money.

Medford Environmental Agent Patty Barry said though the goal is to start construction on the wind turbine in late summer or early fall of 2008, the project will likely happen in spring or early summer of 2009.  Tonight’s meeting is the beginning of the public process to get feedback on the proposed plans.

The wind turbine is expected to generate 10% of the McGlynn School’s electricty each year and save up to $25,000.
