Eager to show off its sparkling new $27 million, 55,000 square foot music center, Tufts University is inviting aspiring musicians from its host communities of Medford and Somerville to learn about different types of music-making from around the world.

The Community Music Program is meant to inspire musicians of all ages and levels.  Tufts’ music undergrads will serve as mentors to local middle school music students, a workshop in West African Drumming is offered for adults, and musicians from 3-18 have their pick of a variety of Saturday morning classes, from dance to piano to Afro-Cuban jazz.

“Part of the mission of Tufts is community engagement, and music is a perfect vehicle for that.  It is also the right time for community music since we have such a beautiful new building,” said program coordinator Edith Auner.

Auner, the founding director of the pre-college and community music program at New York’s Stony Brook University, was hired last year along with her husband, Joe, the chair of the music department.

The Saturday programs begin September 29 and the registration deadline is September 15.  Click here for more information and to sign up.
