Rep. Marzilli Mulls Senate Run

State Representative Jim Marzilli (D-Arlington) announced today he will run for State Senate if State Senator Robert Havern (D-Arlington) relinquishes his seat.

According to the State House News Service, Sen. Havern is considering giving up his seat for a private sector gig.  Rep. Marzilli said he would only run if Sen. Havern leaves the seat mid-term or declines seeking re-election in November 2008.

It will be up to Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) to determine a date for a special election if Sen. Havern leaves his seat before his term expires in November 2008.

Sen. Havern’s district includes all of Arlington, Billerica, and Burlington, and parts of Woburn and Lexington.  Rep. Marzilli would no longer represent Medford if elected to this senate district.

Rep. Marzilli has served parts of Arlington and Medford as state representative for seventeen years.  He said the State Senate, much smaller than the House, would provide him with a “larger platform” and more leverage to work on the same issues, such as education aid, tax relief, and the environment.

“I have had the honor of serving Arlington and West Medford as its state representative…Serving in the State Senate will give me an opportunity to expand my efforts on behalf of our shared concerns,” wrote Marzilli in an email statement.

Rep. Marzilli said he would run a “vigorous and positive” campaign.
